The Photogenic MacArthur Landing/s?

One of the funny facts in Philippine history is the much-romanticized landing of General MacArthur in the Philippines on that fateful day of October 20, 1944 in Leyte. The American general promised the people of the Philippines in 1942 that “I shall return” as he left the island of Corregidor for Australia. As history would have it, MacArthur indeed returned, together with the new President of the Philippine Commonwealth Sergio Osmena and Carlos P. Romulo (that small guy in some of the pictures above). But not without a good angle from the paparazzi.

Apparently, the landing was ‘commanded’ to be repeated several times to make sure that the cameras take a great snapshot of the historic event. Lol. Take a look at the pictures yourself and see how these men kept on changing their pose and positions! My favorite picture was when Carlos P. Romulo turned up right smack in the middle of the photograph.

Not to mention the fact that by the time MacArthur returned to the Philippines, Filipino guerrillas already controlled most of the archipelago, and the fact that the fall of the Philippines in 1942 was a result of MacArthur’s decision to ignore War Plan Orange (he was against the plan) in the opening stages of the invasion, and then being forced to revert to it because his plan wasn’t working, and in the process abandoning many supplies and soldiers to the Japanese, quickening their defeat.

Adding to the fact that the US forces wanted to bypass the Philippines and go straight for Formosa/Taiwan. If they did, the bloodbath that was the Battle of Manila in 1945, that caused over 100,000 civilian casualties and left the city the 2nd most devastated city of the war, probably wouldn’t have taken place. But MacArthur had to keep his promise or something like that.

MacArthur’s reputation comes from Propaganda. I don’t believe he was actually as great as so many people blow him up to be. IIRC, the whole reason he was in the Philippines in the first place was because Pres. Roosevelt wanted him as far as possible.
